to Weigh in on Outsourcing
Recently, Teamster aviation mechanics from 14 different carriers formed the Teamsters Aviation Mechanics Coalition. We took this historic step because mechanics face unprecedented challenges to maintain our standard of living and to ensure the safety and security of our aircraft. One of the most obvious and critical dangers we face is the outsourcing of our maintenance work to both foreign and domestic contractors, like the proposed sale of UAL’s heavy maintenance operation. The Teamsters Aviation Mechanics Coalition intends to weigh in on the public and political debate on outsourcing with the important point of view of the aviation mechanic. As one part of our program to fight outsourcing, we have commissioned a mechanics study on the safety and security of outsourcing. When completed, we will utilize this report in a variety of ways to influence public opinion and policy. In order to make this a report that reflects mechanics’ point of view, we ask that those of you who have worked for a third party contractor, have experience with outsourced work and contractors, or have had to repair items serviceable from a vendor, report what you know.
