UAL Mechanics for Teamsters

  Make Sure You Vote

By Jennifer Uribe, formerly furloughed UAL mechanic, San Francisco

"I was recalled back to UAL as a mechanic this past November. I began my career with UAL in 1999, and became a mechanic the following year. Unfortunately, I was laid off in October 2001. I started with UAL when I was 25 years old. I figured I'd be set for the next 30 years and retire at the age of 55. Unfortunately, that didn't happen and my future dreams with UAL ended. While I was on furlough I had little to no contact with the company or union. I started hearing that people were being called back. Then I received a call from the Teamsters Union, who gave me a brief update about what was happening with UAL, even though I was on furlough. I finally received my letter in the mail to come back to UAL after 6 long years. With apprehension and feelings of vulnerability, I agreed to come back. The fact that the Teamsters Union acknowledged me while I was on furlough has never left my mind. I filled out a Teamsters authorization card because I know the Teamsters have a lot of members and the necessary backing, which helps with the contracts coming up in the future. Anything we can do to build up strength and keep a layoff at bay is critical. My message is: Make sure you vote. Know that your vote does make a difference. Don't put the company in control.  Let us be the ones in control of our future.”
