“We’re a strong group in Denver,” said Ron Campbell, a 22-year UAL mechanic.

Campbell recently joined several teams of mechanics from Denver and beyond on a door-to-door mission. The goal was to spread the word about the campaign and get authorization cards signed, as UAL mechanics nationwide move toward a vote for the Teamsters.

Along with organizing activities in Chicago, UAL mechanics in the “Mile High City” gave of their weekend, demonstrating their dedication to the important cause of securing their future. Goals were met, with several hundred doors knocked on by five teams of mechanics and volunteer organizers.

Shawn Stephens is a mechanic with ABX Air in Wilmington, Ohio, where he and his fellow mechanics are currently organizing to join the Teamsters. Stephens came all the way out to Denver to help the UAL mechanics organize.

“The most memorable thing for me is that most of the mechanics I visited were furloughed and they were really surprised when the Teamsters knocked on their door,” Stephens said. “I think what most caught people by surprise is this: Here’s this union that they’re not even a part of coming to talk to them. And the union they have recall rights with hasn’t informed them of anything.”

Addison Coleman works as a materials specialist for Frontier Airlines in Denver. The Teamsters Local 961 member and shop steward worked Saturday and Sunday with UAL mechanics.

“It was quite rewarding. The mechanics we visited were pretty friendly and asked questions about the big issues, like retirement.”

For Ron Campbell, working the weekend meant investing in his future, and in the future of all UAL mechanics.

“I was happy to be out there organizing,” Campbell said. “This is important for all of us.”
