UAL Mechanics for Teamsters

  Spreading the Word

Weekend House Calls Continue in New York

[body]Aviation mechanics and Teamster organizers recently gave up a weekend to the cause of spreading the word to active and furloughed mechanics about the upcoming vote for representation at UAL.

As with previous house call weekends in cities like Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, and Boston, among many others, this weekend brought out many mechanic volunteers.

Teamster aviation mechanics from AirTran Airways, Continental Airlines, Frontier Airlines and UPS, as well as ABX Air and FedEx (who are currently organizing with the Teamsters) went door to door to talk to UAL mechanics about the upcoming vote and answer any questions they may have had. They also asked the mechanics to sign on to the Teamsters’ “Security First Initiative”, which calls on the FAA to take immediate action to address the outsourcing crisis.

Theresa Lynch has worked as a mechanic for ExpressJet in Knoxville, Tennessee for nearly 10 years, and is a representative to the Teamsters Aviation Mechanics Coalition.

Lynch participated in the weekend house calls.

“It was a new thing for me to do this and I found it exciting to be able to share what I know about the campaign and the Teamsters,” Lynch said.

“We need a union that will not allow the outsourcing of our work, a union that will fight for us during company grievances, and a union that will represent us during contract negotiations. It’s time to get the recognition and wages we deserve as skilled and professional aircraft maintenance technicians.”
